Middle School athletics are completely self-funded.  There are suggested donation amounts associated which would cover the athletic expenses for each sport.  Unfortunately, if the target amount is not reached through donations, the sport may be cancelled.  Click HERE for the 2013-14 donation flyer.

All students planning on trying out for a sports team at Mendenhall must have a current athletic physical on file before tryouts.  Sports physicals are valid for 1 calendar year.  Click HERE to download of copy of the physical form.  Students must have and maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to tryout and participate in athletics.

Thank you Cedar Grove!

On Saturday April 12, 2014, many volunteers from Cedar Grove Community Church joined by staff, PTSA members, and students cleaned up our planter boxes and created a new herb garden. Thank you so much for your efforts to make MMS a beautiful place to learn!

Incoming Parent Orientation

Mrs. Sambuceti and Mr. Bernal had the privilege of meeting with many of the incoming 6th grade parents this week at Sunset and Smith Elementary schools. For any interested parent who might have missed the program, the link to the PowerPoint used for the presentation is HERE. Also attached HERE is the flyer inviting incoming 6th graders to our orientation on April 29.

Join LHS PSTA, LHS Boosters, and Solar Universe for a special screening of Long Shot on Saturday, April 26th at 2PM or 6PM at the Livermore High School theater located at 600 Maple; followed by a Q&A Session with Kevin Laue.
Click HERE to purchase tickets for $5 each or visit www.livermorehighschoolptsa.com/webstore/.

Kevin was born with one arm and became a starting basketball player for coach McKnight’s, a Livermore High School basketball coach, travel team and a starting varsity player for Amador High School. Come see the film and then meet Kevin after for a private Q&A, photos, and autographs. Meet Chad Crittenden, CBS Survivor and amputee, as he moderates these two limited engagement screenings!

The story of Kevin Laue is about having a dream and working hard to make the dream come true. Mr. Laue's story of dedication, perseverance, and hard work is an example to all athletes that they should never let anyone or anything stop them from their dream. Regardless of your dream - the next great artist, athlete, inventor, etc. -  life will present challenges, but don't let the challenges and/or naysayers limit you or take your dream away. There is always a way to live your dream!

Mustangs at WeDay

photo 4.JPG

For the first time ever WeDay came to California.WeDay is a conference with inspirational speeches and performances. Our very own Leadership class was part of this event. Marc and Craig Keilburger founded Free the Children. Their mission was to make a world where all children were free. Craig began this when he was only 12 years old. To this day, Free the children encourages others to help people in need. Tickets for WeDay can't be bought, they are earned with community service. Mendenhall packaged food with Kids Against Hunger for starving people in the Philippines. Eighty  students packaged 7,000 meals! During the holidays, the class adopted 3 families. We collected $1800 in coins and purchased items from the families wish lists, including kitchen supplies, bedding, warm clothes and backpacks. Leadership also hosted a coat drive for the Tri-Valley Haven coat drive during the cold month of January. We gathered 200 coats. It was an inspiring  experience!

History Day State Competitors

History Day State.JPG

Congratulations to all of Mendenhall’s Alameda County History Day participants!  This year’s competition was 50% larger than ever before, with more than 90 students attending from the region's top public and private schools.  Ten Mendenhall students are advancing to State competition in April.  Those students are: Nathan Swartz, for Individual Exhibits; Kaylie DiPaola, Junior Documentary; Mannu Singhal, Individual Website; Andrew Divita, Weston Everett, and Connor Razma, Group Website; Ashley Cole, Individual Performance; Laila Elmashni and Olivia Howe, Group Performance; and Brian Cuy, Historical Paper.

Go Mustangs!

Mannu 2014.JPG

Congratulations to Mendenhall Middle School students Meenakshi Singhal, who tied for 1st place, and Sarah Morgan, who won 4th place in the Alameda County Spelling Bee. Meenakshi will represent Alameda County at the State Junior High Spelling Bee on Saturday, May 3rd.

2014 Science Odyssey

12 MMS students participated in this year’s Science Odyssey, held February 20.   Congratulations to 6th grader, Ryan Van Bladel, who won Best in Show for the Middle School category with his project, “Will a magnet get weaker or stronger as the temperature decreases?”.  First place ribbons were awarded to the team of Sean Griffin, Calvin Jue and Adam Lagodzinski, all 7th graders, for their project “The ‘Whey’ to Make Cheese”.  Receiving 2nd place awards were Jason Van Bladel and Erika Yang, both 8th graders.  3rd place awards were given to Anilyssa Quindipan, 6th grade, Kristina Mena, 8th grade, and the team of Kira Karter & Morgan Laughlin, also 8th graders.  The team of Alexander Bass & Connor Razma received an Honorable Mention for their project.  Well done, all of you!

Tdap Required!

For the 2014-15 school year, a State law now requires that all incoming 7th graders get a whooping cough booster shot, called Tdap, before entering school. Students who have not received this booster shot prior to the beginning of the school year will not be allowed to start school.
We encourage you to contact your child’s doctor now to schedule an immunization appointment, and provide proof to the school office as soon as possible.
Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is widespread throughout California. This vaccine will help keep your child and family protected.
Please contact your school nurse if you have further questions.

Congratulations to all our History Day participants!  Competition was stiff this year, and the judges were very impressed with your work.  Two projects in each category may advance to the Alameda County competition on Saturday, March 15:  For Individual Exhibits, Nathan Schwartz and Lindsey Philips are moving on.  In the Group Exhibit category, Tegan Borg and Shannon Yan will advance, as well as Chris Gonzalez and Mauricio Murillo.  Representing Mendenhall with Individual Websites are Mannu Singhal and Tommy Reeves.  Sarah Ng and Leah Vengely will advance with their Group Website, and so will Andrew Divita, Weston Everett, and Connor Razma.  Both Kaylie diPaola and Tami Lee are taking Individual Documentaries to County.  Advancing in the Group Documentary category are Quinn Loach and Nathan Kamm, along with Julia Cleric and Jenna Jorgensen.  Ashley Cole and Connor Livingston each have an Individual Performance, and Olivia Howe and Laila Elmashni will represent Mendenhall with a Group Performance.  Finally, Brian Cuy and Ariyana Walling will each present a Historical Paper at the County competition.  Congratulations, students!

Smarter Balanced Test Video

Mendenhall is a part of a new national study called the Healthy Communities Study! The survey is trying to find out how community programs and local policies help children be healthy.  A Study Interest Form will be sent home with each student on Thursday, February 6.  Please return these forms by Wednesday, February 12.  All students who return the interest form will receive a small prize - even if the family chooses not to participate in the study itself. Contact Cheryl Clark at 606-4731 or cclark@lvjusd.k12.ca.us if you have any questions about the Healthy Communities Study.

We are going to be collecting any previously worn 8th grade promotion robes for this year’s ceremony.

The largest part of the PTSA budget for the promotion ceremony goes towards robes.

If you have a robe that you would like to contribute to the cause please just bring it to the office.

Dress Code

LVJUSD is renewing its pledge to adhere to Board Policy 5332 and to that aim is asking all schools to strictly enforce the dress code.  To help us in that process, the district has changed some of its procedures.  They are as follows:

1st offense:  referral, required to change clothes*, and parent contact;
2nd offense:  referral, required to change clothes, parent contact, and possible detention;
3rd offense:  referral, required to change clothes, detention, parent contact, and conference required; suspension and school/community service may also be required.

Students will be required to change into clothing provided by the district.  While these changes are not significantly different from our typical practice, there are a few differences.  Previously we have not required boys to change out of sagging pants and have allowed students to change into PE clothes. They often have not received detentions or phone calls home.  We will step up enforcement, and parents, your support of this policy is requested.  Please help your children to dress appropriately for school. Click HERE for examples of appropriate and inappropriate guidelines.
