ATHLETICS 2013-14

Middle School athletics are completely self-funded.  There are suggested donation amounts associated which would cover the athletic expenses for each sport.  Unfortunately, if the target amount is not reached through donations, the sport may be cancelled.  Click HERE for the 2013-14 donation flyer.

All students planning on trying out for a sports team at Mendenhall must have a current athletic physical on file before tryouts.  Sports physicals are valid for 1 calendar year.  Click HERE to download of copy of the physical form.  Students must have and maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to tryout and participate in athletics.

I Can Help Assembly

Excelsior Middle School leadership teacher Kim Karr presented to Mendenhall on Thursday, May 29. She co-founded a program called #iCANHELP when inspired by a concerned student after a fake and damaging Facebook page was created on a local teacher. Kim realized that STUDENTS WANTED TO DO SOMETHING about all the bullying and negativity on social media sites, they just needed the right tools to respond. The #iCANHELP message is clear- one person has the power to make a difference and delete negativity online and in his or her life. Their Website is: www.icanhelpdeletenegativity.org

Incoming Parent Orientation

Mrs. Sambuceti and Mr. Bernal had the privilege of meeting with many of the incoming 6th grade parents this week at Sunset and Smith Elementary schools. For any interested parent who might have missed the program, the link to the PowerPoint used for the presentation is HERE. Also attached HERE is the flyer inviting incoming 6th graders to our orientation on April 29.

Tdap Required!

For the 2014-15 school year, a State law now requires that all incoming 7th graders get a whooping cough booster shot, called Tdap, before entering school. Students who have not received this booster shot prior to the beginning of the school year will not be allowed to start school.

We encourage you to contact your child’s doctor now to schedule an immunization appointment, and provide proof to the school office as soon as possible.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is widespread throughout California. This vaccine will help keep your child and family protected.

Please contact your school nurse if you have further questions.

Attention alumni of M.M.S.!!!!

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!

We are going to be collecting any previously worn 8th grade promotion robes for this year’s ceremony.

The largest part of the PTSA budget for the promotion ceremony goes towards robes.

We are hoping to help to conserve financial resources and reduce waste by reusing robes that are in good shape.  If you have any questions please contact either-

Denise Glasco- glasco4@comcast.net

Or

Lisa Stanford-lisastanford68@gmail.com

If you have a robe that you would like to contribute to the cause please just bring it to the office.

Thank you very much!

Dress Code

LVJUSD is renewing its pledge to adhere to Board Policy 5332 and to that aim is asking all schools to strictly enforce the dress code.  To help us in that process, the district has changed some of its procedures.  They are as follows:

1st offense:  referral, required to change clothes*, and parent contact;
2nd offense:  referral, required to change clothes, parent contact, and possible detention;
3rd offense:  referral, required to change clothes, detention, parent contact, and conference required; suspension and school/community service may also be required.

Students will be required to change into clothing provided by the district.  While these changes are not significantly different from our typical practice, there are a few differences.  Previously we have not required boys to change out of sagging pants and have allowed students to change into PE clothes. They often have not received detentions or phone calls home.  We will step up enforcement, and parents, your support of this policy is requested.  Please help your children to dress appropriately for school. Click HERE for examples of appropriate and inappropriate guidelines.
